SimWiz (Simulation Wizard) is a software application for defining, communicating, validating and running a discrete event simulation model.
Simulations like defining, communicating, validating and running a discrete events are useful in industrial engineering, service system planning, traffic control, communication engineering, processor design, and process flow control.
The aim of simulation is to reveal flaws or allow experimentation in the design of the system which can be tested “on paper” before investing in the creation of an actual system, saving effort and cost.
SimWiz is not just another simulation program or modeling language. Rather it is a totally new approach to help the user in various steps of a simulation project (US patent pending).
The model can be run in the inbuilt simulator or can be translated to an Arena model. It offers to build a model in record time, without errors.
Simulation is imitating reality such as work in a bank, in a port, in a warehouse etc. In these examples the bank or port or warehouse is called system.
SimWiz simulates discrete event systems where the system (such as a machine) has a discrete number of states (for example a machine that is either working on some part, or idle or broken down – 3 states in this example) and transitions between states are instantaneous.
The transitions are called events. Thus, changes in the states are not continuous, not like the speed of a car that changes continuously (although continuous change can be approximated by transitions between discrete values such as 0, 5, 10 mph.
The events occur at various times that may depend on the situation (a machine can break down only during work and not when it is idle) and may be unpredictable (the exact duration of repairing is unpredictable so the event of transition back to working condition is not known ahead either). Thus time and random phenomena (that model unpredictability) play important roles in discrete event system simulation.
SimWiz helps to describe what happens to customers in a bank, ships in a port or containers in a warehouse and simulate the described system. The customers, ships or containers are called entities.
The description is the series of delays, the delays’ causes and durations that are the reason why customers cannot leave the system immediately. For example a customer who wishes to cash a check personally has to wait in a queue that means a delay.
The teller cannot serve immediately either, the time that takes to serve the customer is another delay. This is the reason why the cashing cannot occur instantly, rather it takes time from entrance to the bank until exiting.
Thus, the interaction between entities and delays, their sequence and duration are the essence of the system’s description.
SimWiz solicits information from the user about the entity types, delays, delay sequence and other objects to build the simulation model that describes the situation.
The solicitation is broken down to steps while at each step a specific information is provided by the author. At the conclusion SimWiz builds a model that is ready to simulate the system.

SimWiz is a tool for making simulation models of discrete-event systems and for using those models to simulate possible scenarios in user-defined or built-in simulation arena.
SimWiz enables the user to:
specify the entity types, delays and their sequence to be used in the simulation.
specify the initial values of entity states.
add custom values to entities.
specify the scenarios to be simulated in the simulation arena.
create simulation model with built-in simulator.
create simulation model with external simulator.
run the simulation model with both built-in and external simulator.
select the behaviour of entities (delays) or modify existing behaviour by changing delays, entity states or any parameter.
analyse simulation model output values.
evaluate the model.
create a model executable.
SimWiz Requirements:
SimWiz requires a Windows O.S. for running on a PC.
SimWiz is developed using C++ and MFC (Microsoft Foundation Classes).
SimWiz Component Summary:
SimWiz components are:
SimWiz – creator. It describes system behaviour (Delays, Object, and Parameters) with required scenarios and creates simulation model
SimWiz Arena – simulator that is based on external simulator. By this simulation model is run and the simulation results are viewed.
SimWiz Simulator – simulator that is based on SimWiz Arena. It receives simulation model and runs it.
SimWiz Demo – demonstration application that shows an example of a simulation run with real values and a scenario from SimWiz manual.
SimWiz Example Scenario:
Example scenario in SimWiz is described in the manual to help the user understand how to use SimWiz.

SimWiz software and its author:
SimWiz is a software application for simulating discrete event systems.
SimWiz has been developed to help the user in various steps of a simulation project.
SimWiz can create a new system, or it can easily convert an existing Arena model to SimWiz model.
SimWiz can create a continuous, pseudo-random events system which can be simulated.
SimWiz can create the system that can be simulated in the inbuilt simulator or in the Arena model.
SimWiz can build the system of various entity types, that are interacting with delays and having delays themselves.
SimWiz can also generate help files for the user.
SimWiz Demo:

SimWiz comes in two forms. SimWiz which can create a new system or directly convert an existing Arena model to SimWiz model.
SimWiz comes in two flavours.
SimWiz can create a continuous system which can be simulated by altering random number settings.
SimWiz can also create a pseudo-random system, with interactive samples.
SimWiz, as a system, provides a framework to specify and simulate system, thus allows to view and analyse the behaviour of various systems using various analysis tools.

A brief list of simulation models you may develop in SimWiz is described in the following table.

The simulation model (or System Description) is the verbal description of the system which includes:
1) Defines: the description of the entities and their states/behaviors. The entity’s attribute/behavior is obtained from a program file, typically a file containing a text editor. The attributes are described using the SimWiz specification language. The example shown in figure 1 is a sample of the entity’s description file.
The entity is a kind of “agent” which can perform some action, described using the concepts of event and delay (see below). The entity as described has a unique identifier, a state and can take many actions (no predefined actions are permitted). 2) Events: Events are the changes in the entity’s state. An event is triggered by another entity that may or may not depend on the entity’s state. Generally events are triggered when the state of an entity changes. An event generally results in transition from one state to another and is generally instantaneous (results in instantaneous changes). The transition is triggered upon receiving the event. The event may be described in detail in the description. 3) Delays: Delays are those events that are triggered in a non-immediate manner. The duration of the delay is specified in the delay’s description (typically as a percentage of the entity’s transition time). The entity changes state at the end of delay and returns to its original state when the end of the delay is triggered. The entity can only stay in a state for a limited duration.

The user plays a key role while building the simulation model. They interact with the screen’s windows, widgets, menus and thus answer the solicitation.
The consequence of answering the solicitation is that, the modeler gets the answers in dialog form; thus the modeler can follow the details at each step and choose the answer that is best
