How To Add Devices In The Alexa App. Amazon has finally added a feature to Alexa that many people have been requesting for a long time: favourite devices.
There’s still work to done before the app is as good as, say, Apple’s Home app or the LIFX app, but you now have quick access to turn plugs on and off when you don’t want to speak to Alexa.
The new feature, which available for a week, designed exactly like the widgets found in iOS and the Home app. You should see a pop-up notification, and if you go to the Devices tab, you should see six devices (if you have that many) that can turned on and off or adjusted in some way directly from that screen.
It’s a shame Amazon hasn’t put this on the Home screen or given you the option to choose which tab appears first when you open the Alexa app, but it’s better than nothing.

It’s also worth noting that you can only select individual devices, not groups. Hopefully, Amazon will add this option, along with a search function, because for people like me who have dozens of smart lights, plugs, and Echos, scrolling through a long list can be difficult.
That is, however, not a problem for the majority of people.
A seemingly random selection of six devices chosen, so how to choose different ones.
- Go to the Devices tab in the Alexa app. If you don’t see the Favourites section, update your app. (The feature may not be available in your country yet, but we know it is in the United Kingdom and the United States.)
- Tap the blue star next to any devices you don’t want to be favourites. When you tap Done, they will removed.
- To add new devices, go to the Edit Favourites screen and tap + Add New.
- Select the devices from the list that should be favourites. It divided into the following categories: lights, switches, cameras, thermostats, and Echo devices.
- If you select more than six, you can swipe left on the Devices tab to see the next set of six.
- The only way to use Favourites to control multiple devices is if they already appear as a single device in the Alexa app. ‘All Hue Lights’ is one such example. At the moment, it is not possible to select groups.
- Simply tap on a Favorite device to control it. If the light currently turned off, tapping will turn it on. If any of your favourites have additional settings, such as brightness and colour, tap the three dots to see and adjust them.
