How To Dye Clothes White In Stardew Valley

How To Dye Clothes White In Stardew Valley. For in-game player avatars, Stardew Valley provides an almost absurd amount of outfit possibilities. Almost any object in the game may be combined with Cloth to create a unique outfit, and many clothing items can be coloured.

However, dyeing garments in Stardew Valley isn’t the most simple task. It can be done with a sewing machine or with the dye pots in Emily and Haley’s home. Furthermore, not all dyes are created equal. Let’s take a look at everything there is to know about the dying process to help make sense of it.

How to Unlock Dyeing

It’s not difficult to learn how to tailor and dye. Simply find a single bolt of Cloth and Emily will show up the next day with instructions on how to operate her sewing machine and dye pots. Isn’t it straightforward?

Cloth may be gotten in a variety of methods, so it shouldn’t be too tough to come by. However, here’s a complete list of where you can find it:

  • Place Wool from rabbits or sheep into a Loom
  • Place Soggy Newspaper into a Recycling Machine
  • Defeat Mummies, who can drop it
  • Trade three Aquaramine to the Desert Trader on Wednesdays
  • Befriend Emily, who will sometimes mail some to the farm

Dyeing with the Dye Pots

After you’ve unlocked tailoring, you can colour your clothes in one of two methods. The first topic covered in this post is using Emily’s dye pots. These can be found on the right hand side of the room, near her sewing machine. They appear to be five bowls filled with paint. To access the dye pot menu, simply interact with them.

There are five different coloured pots here, and each one demands an object of the same colour to be dyed. There are many products that can be used for each colour, however crops and forageables are some of the easiest to come by. Any item that can be utilised in the inventory will be marked with a small dot indicating which colour it is. Scrolling over each of the pots will also reveal inventory items that match the colour.

The dye icon in the lower left will light up once all of the pots have been filled.

The following screen appears when you click this:

The colour of an item can be changed by using the sliders from here. The hue slider is on the top, the saturation slider is on the second, and the lightness slider is on the third.

Some important notes:

  • The player must be wearing any item they want to dye
  • All dyeable items being worn will be dyed the same color
    • Take an item off if it shouldn’t be dyed
  • The items used for the colors in the dye pots will be consumed

This is by no means an entire list of everything that can be utilised, however here are some examples for each hue that are readily available:

Dyeing with the Sewing Machine

However, using dye pots isn’t the only way to change the colour of your clothes. On the farm or at Emily’s house, you can also dye clothes with a sewing machine, albeit it works a little differently.

Rather than filling in all the colours and choosing from a slider, the sewing machine consumes one thing at a time and blends its colour with the garment’s colour. For example, if you put a white shirt in the Cloth area and cranberries in the spool, the shirt will turn red. When a yellow shirt is dyed with cranberries, the result is an orange shirt.

Every object that can be used to dye clothing has a strength rating that defines how effective it is at dyeing. A Joja Cola (normal strength) dyes a pair of shorts a very light blue; a Blue Jazz (medium strength) dyes the white shorts a somewhat darker blue; and a Blueberry (strong) dyes the shorts a vivid blue.

Normal-strength things have a strength of about 25%, medium-strength items have a strength of about 50%, and a strong dye item has a strength of 100%. When employing normal-strength things, it will take four applications of dye to obtain the same results as a strong item.

Clothing that isn’t already white can be dyed using the same method. Using a standard strength red item to dye a pair of blue shorts will turn them a somewhat more blueish shade of purple, however using a strong red item will turn them totally red.

A pair of blue shorts is dyed with an Apple (regular intensity red) in this shot, yielding a lovely dark purple that leans toward blue. On the left, a Radish (medium strength red) creates a more balanced purple between blue and red, while Cranberries (strong red) are used to totally red the shorts.

Alternatively, a player can dye their clothes without knowing almost anything about colour combinations and still utilise a sewing machine. The sewing machine will open the hue-saturation-lightness slider option that the dye pots utilise when a Prismatic Shard or a Rainbow Shell is placed in the spool.
