The kids, ages 8-13, compete in the sport of bocce, a ball and pot game, and are coached by fellow members of the N.Y.P.D. Boxing Club. Starting at the end of July, the young men and women practice five days a week, from 8am to 6pm, at the St. Vincent’s Athletic Center. The weekend before the Special Olympics, the club members practice from 7am to 5pm.

“Some of the kids have never even been to a boxing club before, and they are learning how to be a proper sportsman,” said Theo Miles, a club member and coach, who has been around the block a few times. “Not just physically, but mentally as well. It teaches them discipline and to work hard.”

As the first Ward 1 boxing club to participate in Special Olympics, the members of the N.Y.P.D. Boxing Club hope that their players can show the city’s youngsters that they can compete at a higher level if they wish, and that they can do it all without breaking a sweat.

“That’s the most important thing – showing the kids that they can do it, but they don’t have to do it in just one sport,” said the club’s director, Deputy Inspector Patrick J. Sullivan.

To do so, the club arranged to use equipment that they already had in their locker rooms, and bought the rest. They also borrowed clothes for the kids to wear, and purchased the kids’ uniforms as well, and even some replica professional boxing gloves.

When the players came to Sullivan for training, he promised to give them “some boxing” that would be “half as tough as what they’re used to doing on the street.”

He then reminded the kids that New York City was their playground.
