How To Set Up Facebook Protect. Facebook wants you to improve the security of your account. We’ll explain why you should do it and how to started.
When my coworkers told me they had started receiving emails touting something called Facebook Protect, I astonished and concerned. What exactly is it? Who it intended for? Jason Cohen, a PCMag editor, recently blogged about his experience with Facebook Protect.
The signup email seems very similar to a phishing scam. It even contains some of the common red flags that I recommend people watch for when opening links or attachments from new contacts:
- The email demands urgent action on behalf of the account holder.
- The message is from a lesser-known domain (facebookmail.com)
- Some of my colleagues didn’t see the message in Facebook’s archive of official account correspondence.
So far, everything seems a little hazy, right? The email, as well as Facebook Protect, turned proved to be genuine.

What Does Facebook Do To Protect You?
Facebook Protect is the social media platform’s take on multi-factor authentication. It created with the intention of assisting elected officials, political candidates, and their employees in avoiding account hacks that could propagate misinformation. As misinformation about the Russia-Ukraine crisis spreads, Facebook Protect has expanded to include people with large followings or Pages with a large social following.
The application works by enabling easy account monitoring and setting up multi-factor authentication for your account. Page administrators should also double-check their major country locations and use their authentic names.
Proactively Update Your Security
If you haven’t asked to install Facebook Protect yet, you can get ahead of the game by using multi-factor authentication techniques to secure your account. Do you need to alter your authentication process? On the browser, go to the Security and Login part of your Facebook account, or on a mobile device, go to the Password and Security section. Enter your Facebook password after selecting Set up two-factor authentication. If you lose your phone and are unable to get a verification code, you can choose an alternative authentication method or create a recovery code.

What Happens If You Don’t Take Action?
It’s up to you how much you want Meta, a corporation with a history of privacy abuses, to secure your information. If you a huge following on Facebook, though, you must enable the security function to avoid getting locked out of your account.
Is an account lockdown really such a bad thing? In 2015, I quit using Facebook. Long, impassioned diatribes about their political leanings posted by people I vaguely recalled from high school. Their parents were sharing links to incendiary, unconfirmed news that was racist at best and treacherous at worst. I eventually left the site I used to communicate with old pals because it highlighted the ugliest aspects of human nature.
Do you want to give up Facebook for good? You won’t have to worry about hacking or navigating a sea of misinformation if you delete your account. I understand that deleting your Facebook accountan option or a desire for everyone, but I’ve reduced my social media usage to better my mental health and overall well-being, and it worked.
