Avatars aren’t particularly tough bosses, but they have a few surprises up their sleeves. As overworld bosses in Elden Ring, players can ride Torrent. Some Erdtree Avatars found in remote locations where mounted combat is impossible.

Erdtree Avatar Weaknesses
Erdtree Avatars come in two varieties: normal and putrid. The only difference that Putrid Avatars have more health because they found later in Elden Ring.
Their slow movement and lumbering goliaths make their melee attacks easy to anticipate and avoid. Avatars can use the environment around Minor Erdtrees to their advantage, allowing them to catch up and get a big hit in. They also have a devastating homing attack that hits hard.
Erdtree Moveset
- Erdtree Avatar rears up and slams its staff into the ground, dealing direct and AoE damage. Avoid this attack by dodging to either side or sprinting away with Torrent.
- Erdtree Avatar swings its staff in a few lumbering attacks. High damage, but easily avoided by sprinting away (or dodging forwards)
- Erdtree Avatar rises from the ground and slams back down, dealing immediate damage. A backward dodge can avoid medium damage.
- It summons a huge AoE burst and raises its staff to create a horde of light beams. These rapidly shoot towards the player after a pause. If you sprint one direction, you easily get stuck and become a pincushion for these.
Erdtree Avatar Flaws
Because the Erdtree Avatar appears to be vulnerable to Fire damage, Fire-based Incantations and weapons will deal more damage than other attacks. In this fight, Dragonfire leaves a pool of ticking flame damage.
The Erdtree Avatar is immune to Bleed damage and the Death Blighted status effect, so avoid using weapons that cause Hemorrhaging or instant Death. Melee players easily break boss’ Posture and get Critical Hit by chaining Jumping Attacks. Fully-charged Heavy attacks, and Guard Counters (if your shield good enough).
How to Beat Erdtree Avatars
Despite the fact that some of its attacks are strong enough to knock you off Torrent in one hit, it’s best to stay on Torrent for this fight. The boss’s Light Barrage attack is difficult to avoid due to its long wind-up times. Torrent cannot used to fight the Erdtree Avatar in Leyndell.

When the Light Barrage attack comes out, you want an Ashes that can take hits and deflect aggro. Avatars defeated with any Renowned Ashes (except Sorcerers and Archers). Don’t take on the Deeproot Depths Erdtree Avatar without a +10 spirit summon available.
Spellcasting/Ranged
Spellcasters and Ranged players will have a harder time than Melee players because environmental obstacles will usually block your projectiles. It’s best to let the Erdtree Avatar destroy a lot of the environment before attacking it. The Erdtree Avatar’s weakness to Fire makes this fight easier for Incantation users than Sorcerers. Ranged players can use Fire Arrows to increase their Bow damage.
Melee Methods
The Erdtree Avatar’s slow moveset is a huge advantage for melee players. Its vulnerability to being Stance-broken makes fully-charged attacks (whether on foot or on Torrent) super useful in this fight. Pre-buff a Fire weapon to maximise its Flame weakness. If you’re too close, the Light Barrage attack will deal large AoE damage, followed by many smaller pings of damage if you can’t get away fast enough.
Defeating Erdtree Avatars
Defeating Erdtree Avatars in Elden Ring rewards players with two Crystal Tears. The more Crystal Tears you have in Elden Ring, the more effects you can imbue the Flask of Wondrous Physick with.
The Opaline Bubbletear drops from the Weeping Peninsula Avatar, while the Caelid Erdtree Avatar drops the Greenburst Tear, which increases Stamina regeneration, and the Flame-Shrouding Cracked Tear, which increases Fire damage for a short time. To get the best effect from this single-use buff, hunt down lots of Minor Erdtrees.
