Rowan And Holger
There are going to be disputes between various figures in Medieval England’s ruthless, rough-and-tumble culture, especially those with different backgrounds. Holger, a Norse skald, and Rowan, a Saxon stablemaster, are two examples.
Holger is the younger brother of Alvis, the flying teacher, and is a poet as well as a painter. He decided to sneak into Rowan’s stables and cut off the tail of one of his prize horses. In order to build a paintbrush with the little tools he had. His argument for this act is that the horse’s tail will regrow, and hence the injury will not be permanent.
This, in Holger’s opinion, makes his crime irrelevant. Rowan, on the other hand, is understandably unhappy because the horse’s value has plummeted and its tail has removed without consent. On this issue, players must choose whether to support Rowan or Holger.
The Option Before You
If the player chooses Rowan, Eivor will demand that Holger pay Rowan the horse’s full market value. Holger displeased with this approach, and he becomes much more enraged when Eivor discloses that he, too, will be unable to retain the horse.
He claims that he “borrowed the tail” and that it is a “victimless crime” because the tail would grow back in any case. Eivor will confirm that this was a two-victim crime, with Holger taking the tail without permission.
Rowan, on the other hand, receives no punishment other than a verbal rebuke if the player sides with Holger. Holger instead compelled to apologise (in an over-the-top manner) and pledge that he will never do it again. This is a promise he will later in the storey break.
As previously said, the player is free to choose which ending they choose, however most tend to believe that Holger is in the wrong. He not only took the horse’s tail without permission, decreasing its worth, but horses also rely on their tails for health reasons. It won’t be able to swat away flies and other pests without a tail, and it’ll be more susceptible to infection.
Does This Decision Affect The Narrative Or Gameplay?
This choice has no bearing on the plot or the characters involved, nor does it result in any special awards or physical items for Eivor. It just designed to be a fun way for gamers to shape Eivor into the character they choose and give him some personality. It’s merely a moral decision on the player’s behalf.
Eivor will receive 1700 XP for mediating this issue, regardless of the outcome. It’s not a bad approach to get some easy experience points.
In an interesting side point, visiting the stables allows gamers to see (and even ride) the horse at the centre of the conflict. The horse’s absence of hair will allow players to identify it. Again, this isn’t significant in the grand scheme of things, but it’s a nice easter egg.
On PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is now available.
