Skyrim: Fishing Guide. Fishing is a brand-new mechanic in Skyrim Anniversary Edition, including a mini-game, dozens of new quests, and even spaces in player homes to showcase your greatest fish. It’s simple to get started with Fishing, and there are a surprising amount of new fish and unique goods available only through this new minigame.
The Fishing creation is not only featured in the Skyrim Anniversary Edition, but it can also be downloaded for free by Skyrim Special Edition players who have not purchased the upgrade. Whether you want to become a master fisherman or not, there’s no doubt that it’s a lot better than catching fish with your bare hands. This Skyrim Fishing Guide will assist you in getting the most out of this exciting new feature.
Erik Petrovich updated this page on January 4, 2022: Skyrim has recently received an update. Fishing is a calm and absorbing minigame that allows players to acquire materials while also giving them the opportunity to collect rare new things. While fishing in Skyrim is enjoyable as is, there are various mods available that improve the experience by lowering journey time, adding levelling, and even replacing Fishing Spots with a new system. Finding fish is one thing, but catching them is another. The list of catchable fish in this Skyrim Fishing Guide has been revised to highlight potential locations, and the list of Rare Treasures has been updated for readability.

How To Fish in Skyrim
There are a few things to bear in mind when it comes to fishing in Skyrim. Players arrive in Riverwood at the opening of the game, after leaving Helgen Keep, to warn the community of the Dragon onslaught. The first Fishing Rod is located on the outskirts of town, immediately before crossing the bridge that connects Bleak Falls Barrow and Whiterun. Pick up this Fishing Rod and look around for a Fishing Supplies interactable object.
After a brief fade to black, pressing the Action button (E on PC, A on Xbox, X on PlayStation) on Fishing Supplies starts the Fishing minigame. Keep in mind, however, that players cannot cast their line into any body of water; the Fishing minigame can only be launched by interacting with adjacent Fishing Supplies with a Rod equipped (not just in the inventory). Players can interact with the Riften Fishery in Riften and start missions connected to the new feature, such as “Catch Of The Day” and “Juvenile Mudcrab.”

Catchable Fish and Treasures
From Skyrim’s various lakes, rivers, and maritime shorelines, there are a plethora of new fish, aquatic critters, and even treasures to be discovered. Some species can only be caught at specified times of the day or during specific weather patterns, and others are related to specific fishing spots.
Players may be able to fish up unique treasures, all of which are completely new to Skyrim, with enough luck (or gear that improves Fishing). With the Fishing update, new goods such as rings, amulets, weapons, and other objects have been added to the game, many of which provide wholly unique abilities or even allow players to cast new spells without having to learn them from a book.
List of Catchable Fish
In addition to the fish found in the basic game (with the exception of the Slaughterfish, which must be killed), Skyrim now has over 20 more fish thanks to the addition of Fishing.
All of the new fish that can be caught, cooked, or utilised in Alchemy are listed here, some of which give special benefits that can be employed in new Potions.

Skyrim Fishing Tips
All things considered, fishing in Skyrim is rather straightforward. It’s a shame that players can’t cast a fishing line wherever in the globe, but the minigame itself is entertaining and beneficial, especially when played in Survival Mode or for Alchemy purposes. However, when casting out for the first time, there are a few things that every prospective Angler should bear in mind.
- The number of fish accessible at this location is determined by the strength of ripples on the water’s surface when casting out. Wait one day for the fish to respawn if there are no ripples.
- Before it really starts tugging, the fishing line will tug softly a few times. Don’t be fooled by the false start – wait until you’re confident a fish has bitten before pressing the Action button.
- Improved Fishing Rods and the Lucky Fishing Hat are two items that boost the player’s ability to catch fish and rare goods.
- Some fish can only be found in specific locations across Skyrim. Rainy weather, which can be triggered by donning the Lucky Fishing Hat or the Ring of Kynareth, is required for some fish to arrive.
Players are immediately offered the mission Angler Acquaintances after successfully catching a fish for the first time, which leads them to a fishery in Riften. Players obtain new gear, enhance their fishing skills, and are given everything they need to completely master Skyrim’s rivers and lakes as they progress through Swims-In-Deep-several Water’s Fishing-centric questlines.
Useful Skyrim Fishing Mods
The fishing minigame in Skyrim Anniversary Edition is a little barebones – you can only fish at Fishing Supplies locations, and the minigame itself can be tiresome. Thankfully, the Skyrim modding community has come to the rescue with a number of handy Skyrim Fishing mods.
- L.V.X Magick’s Fish Anywhere: Allows players to fish wherever they want, not just Fishing Spots, by using a Lesser Power
- The Skillful Fisherman: Adds Alchemy and One Handed XP while fishing
- Fishing Map Markers: Adds map markers for all Fishing Supplies locations in Skyrim
The Fish Anywhere mod is particularly useful because it makes sense for the Dragonborn to be able to cast their line into any body of water, not simply places where another fisherman has left their gear. Skillful Fisherman is a tiny addition to the minigame that helps it feel more rewarding. Finally, the Fishing Map Markers mod adds markers for newly discovered Fishing Spots, decreasing the need for Fishing Maps.
