How To Get Best Items For A Mage In Skyrim. Mages aren’t the easiest builds to play in Skyrim, but they’re extremely rewarding. Pick up these items to boost the power of your next mage Dragonborn.
Magic users are some of the most enjoyable characters to play in any RPG. They are always weak and vulnerable at the start of the game, but by the end, they are capable of unleashing the most spectacular, fantastical attacks. Of course, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is no exception.
At the start of the adventure, developing a powerful mage in Skyrim necessitates caution and patience. Mages are vulnerable to mud crabs in the early game due to a lack of armour and health, but they’re a formidable character build later on. Finding, stealing, looting, earning, and crafting the right equipment is part of the process of realising a mage’s potential. To that end, here are a few items that mages should keep an eye out for.
Anastasia Maillot updated this page on December 7, 2021: Mages continue to get the short end of the stick, even in Skyrim’s 10th anniversary edition, which makes very few changes to pure mage builds. While there are some notable items, such as the Bloodworm Helm, the majority of pure mage builds will be unaffected by the new gear.
Having said that, the vanilla version of Skyrim still has many items and pieces of gear ideal for a mage, so fans looking to create the perfect pure mage build shouldn’t have a hard time deciding on the best items for a mage in Skyrim.

How To Get Best Items For A Mage In Skyrim
Bond Of Matrimony
This is a more specialised piece of equipment, but it can be useful in combat for certain mages. For those who specialise in Restoration magic, the Bond of Matrimony obtained by completing a wedding and marrying an NPC of one’s choice grants a 10% Magicka discount on Restoration spells.
To marry in Skyrim, players must travel to Riften and speak with Maramal at the Bee and Barb Inn. Mara’s amulet is also required for marriage, and most NPCs will ask the Dragonborn to complete a favour before agreeing to marry.
Savos Aren’s Amulet
After completing the quest Containment in the College of Winterhold questline, Savos Aren will give the player his amulet. This amulet is simple, but it is valuable because of what it provides: 50 points of additional Magicka to the wearer.
To gain access to the related quests, players must first join the College. However, most mages should join the College as soon as possible in order to gain access to as many spell book vendors as possible.
Ring Of The Erudite
This ring is extremely powerful and can be found in the Dawnguard DLC. It bestows 100 points of Magicka on the wearer while also increasing the rate at which Magicka regenerates. As a result, it’s a must-have for any mage who wants to constantly spam spells in combat.
Unfortunately, in order to obtain this ring, players must choose Lord Harkon’s side in the Dawnguard DLC’s main quest. To obtain this ring, choose to become a Vampire Lord at the end of the quest Bloodline. After all, great things necessitate great sacrifices.
Diadem Of The Savant
This circlet grants players a 5% Magicka discount on all spells cast. It’s not spectacular, but it’s still worth collecting. The Diadem can be found in Skyrim at two distinct locations: Froki’s Shack and Shalidor’s Maze.
The circlet is classified as Light Armor in the game, making it ideal for mages who prefer to stay light on their feet and avoid most armour.
Helmet Of The Old Gods & Armor Of The Olds Gods
Both of these pieces of Light Armor equipment can be obtained by completing the quest No One Escapes Cidhna Mine. It can begin in Markarth. The Old Gods’ helmet and armour are fantastic pieces of mid-game armour for any aspiring mage.
The Helmet of the Old Gods grants the wearer 30 Magicka points, while the armour grants a 15% Magicka discount on all spells cast. Though nothing out of the ordinary, it can make a significant difference around mid-game.
Bloodthorn
This one-of-a-kind dagger is enchanted with the Soul Trap spell. If an enemy dies within three seconds of being struck by Bloodthorn, their soul is absorbed into the wielder’s Soul Gem. When modded, it also looks pretty cool.
While Soul Gems aren’t necessary for all types of mage, they are extremely useful for enchanting items and recharging staves for the all-around complete magic user. Bloodthorn can be found on an altar on a balcony in Hag’s End, which can be reached via Deepwood Redoubt in the mountains directly north of Karthwasten and west of Dragon Bridge.

Potion Of Regenerate, Fortify & Restore Magicka
The most commonly used potions among mages, regardless of their specialisation, are those that restore Magicka, and this recipe restores Magicka in three different ways at the same time.
Make this potion by combining:
- Jazbay Grapes, commonly found on rocky terrain near hot springs.
- Briar Hearts, which can pickpocketed or looted from Forsworn Briarhearts (common in The Reach, the western region of Skyrim around Markarth).
- Moon Sugar, which rare, but can always bought from Khajiit caravans. Look for them outside Dawnstar, Markarth, Riften, Solitude, Whiterun and Windhelm.
The Black Star
This Daedric artefact functions as a reusable Soul Gem, absorbing both white and black souls. This makes it extremely useful for enchanters and staff users, especially when combined with Bloodthorn or the Mace Of Molag Bal.
The Black Star can only obtained by completing the quest of the same name, which begins by visiting the Shrine Of Azura, which located high in the mountains directly south of Winterhold. Give the Broken Azura’s Star to Nelacar in Winterhold’s Frozen Hearth Inn at the end of the quest, and he will transform it into the Black Star before returning it to you.
Mage’s Circlet
This circlet simply grants the wearer more Magicka, but the amount depends on the character’s level when the circlet is first obtained. It given to the player after they complete the “Good Intentions” questline, which part of the main College Of Winterhold questline.
To receive the full 70 Magicka bonus from the Mage’s Circlet, the player must be at least level 25 when completing “Good Intentions,” so it’s best to wait until you’re at least level 24 before beginning that quest.
Mace Of Molag Bal
This may appear to be a heavy weapon for most mages, but it has numerous advantages for any magic user interested in using staves or enchanting items. It not only deals a lot of Stamina and Magicka damage, but it also casts Soul Trap.
It is given to the player after completing “The House Of Horrors,” a quest that and ends in an abandoned house in Markarth. To complete the quest and receive the mace, the player must kill Logrolf.
Ahzidal’s Ring Of Arcana
This one-of-a-kind ring bestows upon the wearer the ability to cast two terrifying destruction spells, Ignite and Freeze, neither of which can learned in any other way. Ignite and Freeze are similar to Firebolt and Ice Spike, but cost less Magicka and have greater power.
The ring obtained during the quest “Unearthed” inside Kolbjorn Barrow on Solstheim. To begin the quest, locate Kolbjorn Barrow southeast of Raven Rock and speak with Ralis Sedarys. Continue along the passage and up the stairs to a large room after the third investment (of 3,000 gold) and clearing the barrow of Draugr. To open the gate and retrieve the ring, light all of the floor tiles at the same time (using Whirlwind Sprint or Slow Time).
Gloves, Boots & Necklace Of Peerless Destruction
In general, it is more efficient to reduce the cost of casting spells than to increase the amount of Magicka the caster possesses. It’s even possible to equip four Peerless Destruction (or any other school of magic) items, implying that spells from that school never deplete Magicka.
Many players consider this cheating – it certainly makes things boringly easy – but using three items to reduce casting costs by 25% each is generally considered fair game. Furthermore, there are no interesting, one-of-a-kind gloves, boots, or necklaces for mages, so do-it-yourself enchantment is the best option.
Miraak’s Staff
This staff has the one-of-a-kind effect Mora’s Agony. This allows the player to summon poisonous, impassable tentacles from the ground, which extremely useful for mages because it can used to keep enemies from approaching and striking the player. The poison they inflict is also quite useful.
The staff looted from Miraak’s remains after defeating him at the end of the Dragonborn questline. The only other way to obtain the Mora’s Agony power is to complete the “Black Book: Hidden Twilight” quest and read the Black Book.
Staff Of Magnus
This staff drains Magicka from its target, replenishing the player’s magical power while also making magic-using enemies less dangerous. Once the target’s Magicka has completely depleted (or if they don’t have any in the first place), the staff drains their Health at a significantly faster rate than any vampiric power.
The staff obtained as part of the main College Of Winterhold questline during the quest of the same name. The player must use it to destroy the Eye Of Magnus at the end of the questline and may keep it after the quest finished.
Archmage’s Robes
Only the Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold (the most powerful mage in Skyrim, at least officially) permitted to wear these robes, which should give a good indication of their quality. They reduce the cost of all spells by 15% and provide significant bonuses to Magicka and Magicka regeneration.
Nothing else in the game compares to the power of the Archmage’s Robes. The only way to obtain them is to promoted to Arch-Mage, which can only accomplished by completing the main College Of Winterhold questline.
