GitHub’s mobile app for Android now available

What you must know What

  • GitHub’s Android app finally released as beta.
  • The company launched a corresponding iOS app a few weeks ago with an Android app.
  • The new beta app is designed to support developers while on the go.

GitHub finally released its Android mobile app, though beta. The company initially started this with a promised Android app for iOS in late 2019.

In a blog post, GitHub’s Ryan Nystrom explained why the new mobile app is:

There’s a lot you can do on GitHub that doesn’t require a complex development environment, like sharing feedback on a design discussion or reviewing a few lines of code. We’re making these tasks easier to complete while you’re on the go, with a fully-native experience. With GitHub for mobile, you have the flexibility to move work forward and stay in touch with your team, wherever you are.

As you expected of a mobile GitHub app, the service gives you priority to review code quickly, combine changes and cooperate from all over the world, as long as an Android device is on you.

The GitHub app is designed to work with multiple screen sizes and supports Android tablets and foldables, and supports the latest Android functions such as dark mode.

Update: Out of Beta

After two months of beta testing, GitHub has released its Android app.

“The answer for the beta has been unbelievable— beta testers have commented, reviewed and combined almost 100 000 requests for pull-outs alone during the last weeks. And since we first released the beta for download, there have been tens of thousands of team interactions,” Ryan Nystrom said.

The app is now available for download from the Play Store.
